Depression - The effect of Twisted Thinking

If really feel depressed, it could be the effects of "twisted thinking". There are many different twisted ways of thinking, but here I want to debate two, overgeneralisation and person mental filter. If you can expect to catch yourself making examples of these errors, you can use ways to overcome and dramatically optimize depression.

The first error, overgeneralisation is when you will be making the assumption that if something happens once, it will will arrive for ever after.

You get a job and don't shift. Overgeneralisation makes you conclude "I'll never have any job. It's completely hopeless". Overgeneralisation multiplies the pain of setbacks or rejections several times. You could look at a setback as just a keen isolated event, but instead you interpret this a message from the planet that all your desired goals are doomed.

Overgeneralistion can happen notwithstanding all the evidence. Ruben Burns, in his book Feeling good, tells about the downwards salesman who noticed bird dung within the car window and the "That's just my fortune. The birds are very crapping on my frosted glass! ". When asked he isn't think of another time up to now twenty years when had been happened. By becoming aware of too . overgeneralising, and challenging it (for instance by asking should it be true that something "always" or "never" happens) you'll be ready to overcome it.

The other form related twisted thinking that I needed discuss here is the product's mental filter. This happens when you focus your attention on not many negative elements, giving them importance in all the proportion. For instance, if for example your student takes a prove to be with 100 questions and gets ten men wrong, the mental filter tends to make him obsess about it ten errors, ignoring that a he in fact scraped 90%, an excellent credit report score. As another example, I might see thirty patients within the week and have one session that didn't go well, which a client did not think came into existence helpful. The mental filter tends to make me concentrate on in the process, ignoring the fact that very the other sessions the idea week, and most of the classic sessions with that patient in other weeks, did in fact match. This sort of behaviour derives from depression. When we are depressed we are only respond to negative information, and that negative information causes us to more depressed. We can discover how to recognise when the psychological filter is operating and ways to defeat it, saving automatically much needless suffering.
